수치심, 불안 등 현대인이 시달리는 부정적 감정 연구에 15년 이상 매진해 온 그녀는 현대 대중심리의 최고 권위자다. 오랜 연구 끝에 이러한 부정적 감정을 해소하는 방법이 자신의 취약성을 드러내는 것이라는 결론을 도출해냈고 그 과정과 결과를 고스란히 이 책에 쏟아 부었다. 자신의 취약성을 인정하고 드러내면 수치심, 불안, 강박 등의 공격에 끄떡없다는 것이 《마음가면》의 핵심 내용이다.
책 출간에 앞서 브레네 브라운은 2010년과 2012년, 자신의 독창적인 연구 결과를 더 많은 사람들에게 이를 알리고자 TED에서 〈취약성의 힘〉과 〈수치심에 귀 기울이기〉라는 강연을 선보이기도 했다. 이 두 강연은 2500만 뷰라는 경이로운 기록과 함께 TED 역사상 최다 시청률을 기록한 명강의 중 하나로 회자된다. 그러나 18분이라는 짧은 강연에서 못 다 한 이야기가 너무 많았던 그녀는 취약성과 수치심에 대한 모든 이야기를 이 책 《마음가면》에 상세하게 담아냈다.
